  Lesson Overview

Goal: To increase opportunities for placing vocabulary into long-term memory through repeated exposures in multiple media and multiple forms in an authentic context.

Rather than a single lesson, a series of lessons will be presented.  In actuality, what is presented here is a merging of a previous Internet-based project I did from 2004 to 2005 on vocabulary acquisition through repeated exposures called the Short Readings Project and a new project I am currently involved in called Moodle for Mobiles that is exploring the use of mobile phones in language learning.

Succinctly, 112 vocabulary items were selected that are found in a listening context in ten trailers found on the English study website English Trailers. The lessons described here provide students with 7 exposures to each vocabulary over eight weeks. In all exposures, the meaning of the vocabulary as it is used in the context found in the trailer is used.

The students are exposed to the vocabulary in the following ways:

  • 3 times in 15 short reading passages (220-410 words)
  • 2 times in multiple choice checks
  • 1 time in a short email message sent to students' cell phones
  • 1 time in the trailer

Section 2 will present a short literature review on vocabulary acquisition through repeated exposures.
Section 3 will present the inception and use of the lessons.
